- A. Plasticizer Market Update - Michael Bisig, BASF
Mike Bisig is the Business Manager, Plasticizers & Phthalic Anhydride NAFTA at BASF Corporation in Houston, Texas. He began his career at BASF in 1985 after majoring in Chemistry at the University of Louisville. Over the years, Mike has held a variety of technical and commercial positions, including sales and marketing, e-Business and strategic development roles, serving the automotive, pulp & paper and petrochemicals markets.
- B. Low Volatile HIgh Performance Stablizer Systems for Flexible Vinyl - Luis Cruz, Hal
Luis Cruz is the Market Development Manager for Halstab, a division of Hammond Group, Inc. He is responsible for the sales in Mexico and the development of new accounts in the NAFTA region. Mr. Cruz holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Ashland University, and a Masters in Sciences and Bachelor in Sciences, Chemical Engineering from Guadalajara University. Luis has been married for 12 years, and has two daughters and one son.
- C. European Resin Update - Tony Ryan, Vinnolit GmbH & Co. KG
- D. Wetting Agents - Patrick Laine, BYK USA
Pigments are used for their decorative and functional properties. To optimize the benefits of pigments, it is critical that they be properly dispersed and stabilized. One of the more important steps in the production of pigmented systems is the homogeneous distribution of pigment particles within the liquid binder solution. If the pigment dispersion/stabilization step is not optimized, a wide variety of defects can occur: flocculation, loss of gloss, low color strength, color shift, loss of hiding power or transparency, flooding & floating, Bénard cells, settling, rub-up, and application dependent color development. Rheological behavior such as sagging and leveling can also be negatively influenced.
The proper use of wetting and dispersing additive for stabilizing pigments in both solvent and water-based systems will be emphasized. Steric stabilization for solvent systems and electrostatic repulsion for waterborne ssytems will be discussed along with the benefits of higher molecular weight products to provide improved stabilization. Deflocculating wetting additives versus controlled flocculating will be highlighted and discussion to identify which mechanism is desirable. The advantages of using additives for optimal color development, gloss, hiding and preventing flooding and floating will be examined. The challenges for wetting & dispersing in high solids, solvent free and water-based systems will be explored. Various generations of wetting and dispersing additives will be outlined and their respective advantages demonstrated.
Patrick Lainé studied chemistry in France, his native country, and worked for BYK-Chemie GmbH, Wesel, Germany, worldwide leader in specialty additives for coatings and plastics, from 1989 through 1994. As a chemist, he performed technical service for customers, with special emphasis in automotive and coil coatings markets. In 1995, Patrick transferred to BYK USA Inc., Wallingford, Connecticut, as the NAFTA End-use Manager for General Industrial Coatings & Pigment Concentrates. Since July 2008, Patrick took new responsibilities as NAFTA Paint Laboratory Manager and Product Manager for Wetting & Dispersing additives.
- E. Commerical Session - Safe Plasticizer based on Renewable Resources - Klaus Klingber
The following presenter(s) paid a fee to The Vinyl Products Division for the privilege of presenting this material, which is commercial in nature.
- Safe Plasticizer Based on Renewable Resources (Dr. Klaus Klingberg, Jungbunzlauer, Inc.)

- F. New Plasticizer Technology - Bill Arendt, Genovique Specialties
Bill Arendt is currently a Research Fellow at Genovique Specialty Corporation (formally known as Velsicol Chemical Corporation). He works on the support and development of plasticizers for vinyl and other applications areas. He currently has 12 US patents, foreign patents and has published articles on plasticizer and related technologies. He is an Honored Fellow of the Society of Plastic Engineers and is currently the Councilor of the Vinyl Plastics Division of the SPE. Bill is married, has six sons and five grandsons. In the little time he has left for himself he is an American Civil war amateur historian/buff.
Plasticizers are key PVC raw materials. Most of the plasticizers manufactured are phthalates and most of that class of plasticizer sold is what are commonly called general-purpose plasticizers. They provide well balanced performance. Specialty plasticizers are used in blends with GP phthalates to enhance performance or processability, or alone where specific performance beyond what GP types provide is required. This paper will review the types of specialty plasticizers available and discuss performance advantages with a focus on benzoate and a new green technology. - G. Acrylic Plastisols - Peter Runciman, Dianal America, Inc
Peter Runciman is Marketing Manager for Dianal America, Inc. in Pasadena, Texas. Dianal is a leading producer of acrylic and styrene-acrylic resins, supplying the coating, inks and adhesives industry. He joined the company in October 2003 after holding various technical and marketing positions with ICI in the UK and ICI in the US (which later became Lucite International). Peter Runciman received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1982, and a PhD in physical organic chemistry, in 1986. Both degrees were conferred by the University of London, UK. He completed one year of post-doctoral studies at the University of Southern Mississippi in polymer science.
- H. North American Dispersion Resin Update - Patrick Maloney, Poly One
- I. Loren Scott, Keynote - State of the Economy
