European Union Metric Directive

The European Union (EU) Metric Directive 80/181/EC (2002) proposed to allow the use of only metric units and prohibit the use of any other measurements for products sold in the EU. Pursuant to the directive, metric-only labeling on packaging, advertising, catalogs and manuals would be mandatory beginning January 2010.

Numerous companies and organizations, including SPI, strongly opposed the directive citing the significant compliance costs:

As a result of that opposition, the European Commission (EC) issued a formal proposal to indefinitely postpone the metric-only marking requirements on September 10, 2007.  That proposal was approved by the EC Parliament on November 29, 2007, and is currently awaiting adoption by the EC Council.
