Contact: Bonnie Merrill Limbach FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SPI AND IN-BUSET TEAM UP TO OFFER TRAINING COURSE ON OSHA GENERAL INDUSTRY SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARDS WASHINGTON (May 8, 2000) – The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) plans a two-day course of comprehensive instruction on the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) General Industry safety and health standards – specifically designed for plastics processors. The sessions, which will be held August 16-17 in Indianapolis, are being presented by SPI in partnership with the State of Indiana Department of Labor Bureau of Safety Education and Training (IN-BuSET). The course is endorsed by the Mid-America Plastics Partners, Inc. (MAPP). The training incorporates an OSHA 10-hour Voluntary Compliance Certification course and includes detailed instruction on the OSHA General Industry safety and health standards most commonly used in the plastics industry. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive the 10-hour OSHA course completion card and Certificate of Completion. Susan Howe, SPI technical director for worker and product safety, noted that the course was timely, as OSHA has announced its plans to make comprehensive inspections of thousands of manufacturing plants with high injury rates. The course, she said, is designed for individuals with OSHA compliance responsibilities, including supervisors, safety directors, human resource personnel, production managers, maintenance personnel and production engineers. The benefits, she said, "will be immediate, as participants learn how to prevent injuries associated with injection molders, blow molders, extruders and plastics grinders, as well as the best practices and methods for accomplishing safety training." With this knowledge, she continued, "they can help their employers comply with state and federal OSHA standards, improve their company health and safety programs and reduce workers' compensation costs. "SPI is pleased to partner with IN-BuSET to bring this valuable training to plastics processors," Howe added. The fee for the two-day course is $149 for SPI or MAPP members and $199 for non-members. The course is not limited to Indiana residents. For more information on the training, contact Howe at 202/974-5223; e-mail showe@socplas.org. Founded in 1937, The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc is the trade association representing the fourth-largest manufacturing industry in the United States. SPI's 1,700 members represent the entire plastics industry supply chain, including processors, machinery and equipment manufacturers and raw material suppliers. The U.S. plastics industry employs 1.3 million workers and provides $274 billion in annual shipments. More About SPI: Vision and Mission . Membership . Business Units . Regional Offices .
