WASHINGTON (April 18, 2000) — The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) announced today that effective April 17, Gary Moore has joined SPI as director of workforce development, further strengthening SPI's focus on this issue.

In this newly created position, Moore will have direct responsibility for the strategic planning and implementation of programs to provide solutions to the plastics industry's workforce development needs, including recruitment, retention, training and professional development initiatives.

In announcing the appointment, SPI President Donald K. Duncan said, "Workforce development is one of the most critical issues facing the plastics industry. SPI intends to be the leading provider of targeted solutions to help companies increase their profitability through improved performance in this area. Gary Moore has the experience and leadership skills to help SPI achieve this goal."

Among Moore's responsibilities will be the development of integrated relationships with state and local economic and education officials, training providers, academics and employers to develop coalitions, programs and funding mechanisms to promote plastics careers and provide the necessary training tools to build a productive plastics workforce. Moore will also serve as SPI's liaison to other industry groups and allies to represent the plastics industry's interests in this area.

Moore will oversee existing SPI programs such as National Certification in Plastics, the Plastics Learning Network distance learning project, the Orient Me! employee orientation software and others, in addition to developing new products.

Moore brings a solid background of more than 20 years of experience as an executive and consultant specializing in workforce development. He has worked with such organizations as the National Alliance of Business, National Commission for Employment Policy, the Technical Assistance and Training Corporation, National Association of Private Industry Councils and DTI, Inc. He was most recently director of special projects for the National Association of Workforce Boards. He holds a B.A. in International Economics from the American University School of International Service.

"Gary Moore's background and experience are ideally suited to working with the issues facing the plastics industry and building coalitions with the partners that can contribute to the industry's success," said Catherine Randazzo, SPI vice president, strategic business initiatives.

Founded in 1937, The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc is the trade association representing the fourth-largest manufacturing industry in the United States. SPI's 1,800 members represent the entire plastics industry supply chain, including processors, machinery and equipment manufacturers and raw material suppliers. The U.S. plastics industry employs 1.3 million workers and provides $274 billion in annual shipments.
