October 24 was Lobby Day in the Senate in support of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). PLASTICS staff joined with representatives from other business associations and corporations to visit with trade staff in Senate offices to share the statistics, successes and stories of NAFTA from each respective industry. The Lobby Day was organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, of which PLASTICS is an active member. Throughout the day, groups of NAFTA supporters visited all 100 Senate offices. PLASTICS staff joined with others from the agricultural, high-tech, apparel and financial services industries to show broad-based support to strengthen NAFTA without harming the agreement. Our collective message was well-received as there continues to be wide support for the agreement from Republicans and Democrats.

PLASTICS will continue to work with members of the Senate and the House during the remainder of the tri-lateral negotiations and as the updated agreement moves to Congress for approval under the President’s Trade Promotion Authority (TPA). The fourth round of negotiations ended on October 17 in Arlington, Virginia. The fifth round of talks will take place in Mexico City from November 17 to 21 with continuing rounds being scheduled in the first quarter of 2018 and rotating between the three countries.
