WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bioplastics Council, a special interest group of SPI: the Plastics Industry Trade Association, today announced its agenda of activities for 2012, as well as the volunteer leaders who will serve the Council as new chair and vice chair. The current global market for bioplastics -- plastics that are biodegradable, have biobased content, or both-- is estimated to grow by a 41% compound annual growth rate through 2015.
In order to further its mission to promote the development of bioplastics as an integral part of the plastics industry, the Bioplastics Council has set forth an agenda to meet the following key objectives in 2012:
“The past year was another successful one for the Bioplastics Council and I’d like to thank past chair Steve Davies of NatureWorks for leading the helm. In 2011 the Council added several new members, launched new committees to focus on beginning of life and end-of-life product issues, conducted various marketing activities and strengthened its relationship with a range of organizations such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture,” said Edwin Tam, Manager – New Strategic Initiatives, at Teknor Apex (Pawtucket, RI), who was recently announced as the Council’s new 2012 chair. “In 2012 we look to build on the Council’s momentum with an exciting slate of activities over the coming year. Our multi-year roadmap is designed to continue to strengthen the Council’s position as the recognized expert and the voice of North American bioplastics industry.” As vice chair, John Moisson, President, Jamplast Inc. (Ellisville, MO), will join Tam in steering the Council’s 2012 efforts.
Launched in 2008, the Bioplastics Council was created to provide a forum for the full bioplastics value chain to promote the development and growth of the bioplastics industry. Currently, the members of the group are BASF Corporation, Cereplast Inc., DuPont, Ecospan, Jamplast, Merquinsa, NatureWorks LLC, Nypro Inc., PolyOne Corporation, RTP Company, Teknor Apex, Telles (a Metabolix/ADM Joint Venture) and Underwriters Laboratories.
