SPI Bioplastics Council Announces Publication of 2012 Bioplastics Industry Overview Guide

Industry-Developed Publication Provides Timely Industry Overview

ORLANDO, FL – The Bioplastics Council, a special interest group of SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association, announced at NPE2012 the publication of the 2012 Bioplastics Industry Overview Guide. The new Guide, which is an update to the Council’s original 2009 guide, provides readers with information concerning industry trends and challenges; types, applications and uses; industry production estimates and projected market growth; market segments and emerging applications; and geographic development.

“Bioplastics education is a top priority for the Council.  This guide, in conjunction with the Council’s “Business of Bioplastics” event at NPE2012 on Tuesday, April 3, confirms the Council’s ongoing commitment to education,” said Melissa Hockstad, SPI’s vice president, science, technology and regulatory affairs. “The guide, written by bioplastics industry professionals, provides an important and timely overview of an industry poised for growth and changing at a relatively rapid pace. As bioplastics continue to make inroads into new markets, the business world has taken notice and the desire to learn more about bioplastics is at an all-time high.” 

The Bioplastics Industry Overview Guide is available in a digital download format from SPI’s Plastics Industry e-Store ( and through It is free for members of the Bioplastics Council and $499 USD for non-Bioplastics Council companies. 

Launched in 2008, the Bioplastics Council was created to provide a forum for the full bioplastics value chain to promote the development and growth of the bioplastics industry. Currently, the members of the group are BASF Corporation, Cereplast Inc., DuPont, Ecospan, Jamplast, Metabolix, NatureWorks LLC, Nypro Inc., PolyOne Corporation, Teknor Apex, Telles and UL.
