  • Director, Economics and Statistics

    Reports to: Senior Director, Industry Affairs
    FLSA Classification: Exempt
    Office Location: Headquarters, Washington, DC

    General Summary: Serve as the organization’s primary staff expert on economics, statistics and industry research. Responsible for the identification, development, execution, ongoing management and promotion of PLASTICS research, insights, benchmarking and thought leadership platforms. Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders on PLASTICS research projects. Oversee certain U.S. and international economic and statistical programs within the association.

    Essential Functions:

    • Responsible for the identification, development, execution and publishing of PLASTICS economic research, benchmarking, thought leadership and industry insight projects and programs.
    • Develop, manage and execute internal research mechanisms, data collection vehicles and reporting capabilities (i.e. member surveys, public data, government databases, economic reports, etc.).
    • Manage specific projects, timelines and deliverables.
    • Ongoing management of PLASTICS’ Committee on Equipment Statistics data and analysis.
    • Serve as spokesperson on economic and trade statistics, coordinating messages with PLASTICS Communications staff.
    • In conjunction with marketing and communications teams, develop and execute publication marketing and promotion plans for research/insights/thought leadership, PLASTICS communication platforms, website, webinars, social media, trade/consumer press, etc.
    • Deliver presentations on PLASTICS research and industry insights at internal council/committee meetings and other selected venues.
    • Develop educational tools and programs (meeting programs, seminar, webinars, et.) in support of industry research and surveys.
    • Manage vendors responsible for providing economic and other industry research reports.
    • Manage research project budgets.
    • Participate in external programs with counterparts in member companies, coalitions, and other trade associations.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    • Internal: Staff, legal counsel and consultants, membership.
    • External: Government agencies, federal, state and local representatives, non-member companies, industry associations and coalitions, media and NGOs.

    Job Qualifications:

    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Economics or related discipline, with course work in statistics; masters or law degree preferred.
    • Experience: 7+ years in association management, market research, consulting, analytics/insight development. Qualitative and quantitative research experience; 1+ year(s) of professional experience in a manufacturing-related industry.
    • Core Competencies: Teamwork, ethical behavior, ability to quickly adjust to change and to work under pressure. Customer service orientation. Outstanding written and oral communications skills. Member communications – written and oral – are a central part of PLASTICS’s day-to-day business; staff member will be expected to treat member communications as a top priority. Ability to manage a variety of projects simultaneously. Ability to travel, both domestically and internationally.

  • Digital Communications Specialist

    The Plastics Industry Association, a D.C.-based trade association which represents the nation’s nearly one million workers in the $418 billion plastics industry, is seeking a Digital Communications Specialist to join our communications team. 

    The ideal candidate will have experience producing content for brands’ or clients’ social media platforms, in addition to traditional print, broadcast and/or public relations experience. We are looking for someone who can develop creative, compelling content in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, and write for all forms of media, including digital, print and video.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Draft content including, but not limited to, press releases, blog posts, video scripts, marketing emails and key messages for spokespeople.
    • Create monthly social media editorial calendars for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. Additionally, refine calendar on a weekly basis with relevant, timely content.
    • Promote association’s highly technical events and initiatives, using key messages to refine into simple, memorable pieces of content, across various channels, including website, marketing emails and social media.
    • Proof/Edit a variety of materials, including internal magazine articles, blog posts, reports, and marketing emails.
    • Work with designers to create visual content and visual brand elements to bring communications concepts to life, especially in social media posts.
    • Create new, or modify existing PowerPoint presentations as needed. 
    • Keep the team organized, create and maintain editorial calendar(s), and track deliverables.

    Required Skills and Experience

    • Exceptional ability and 3-5 years experience in writing for communications, marketing and storytelling.
    • Experience managing social media platforms.
    • A portfolio of excellent published work that demonstrates an ability to think creatively about appealing to diverse audiences.
    • Ability to tailor concepts to maximize appeal in web content, digital products, print materials, email campaigns and other communications venues.
    • Demonstrated experience managing a large number of projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with minimal oversight. Super organized.
    • Ability to receive constructive feedback and translate it into modified/new content.
    • Ability to develop metrics for quality of work, measure them and incorporate them in new campaigns, initiatives and projects.
    • Outstanding command of English vocabulary, grammar and style. Experienced and takes pride in editing.
    • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

    Background: The American Progressive Bag Alliance is the trade association for a thriving and resourceful industry of plastic bag manufacturers and suppliers employing 25,000 American workers in more than 40 states. We proactively promote product lines and lead numerous public policy initiatives that serve as the frontline defense against plastic bag bans and taxes nationwide.  The APBA is a part of the Plastics Industry Association.

    General Summary: The Manager, External Relations, will play an important role in member and public engagement. Along with preparing communications to members of the APBA, the manager will be tasked with stakeholder engagement throughout the country   

    Essential Functions:

    • Work with Executive Director and regional, state, and local consultants to engage stakeholders in areas of strategic importance.
    • Develop and distribute regular member communications that are thoughtful and engaging.
    • Work with internal and external public affairs and media relations teams to produce content and conduct necessary outreach to elected officials. 
    • Help defeat burdensome taxation and regulation while promoting an industry committed to sustainability, recycling, and creating manufacturing jobs in America.

    • Core Competencies: Outstanding written and oral communications skills. Understanding of the legislative process.  Teamwork, ethical behavior, ability to quickly adjust to change and to work under pressure.
