BACKGROUND

In late 2000 SPI's Strategic Management Group on Public Policy (SMG #1), determined that "energy" should be an issue of the highest priority, because of its profound impact on the plastics industry. With that in mind an "Energy Task Force" was established to: Develop relevant energy policies; Advocate positions in policy debates at the national and state levels; Pursue research and studies to support industry positions as necessary and, liaison with other plastics industry, and allied associations to address the energy issue, including decisions on policy, lobbying strategies, coalition memberships, etc.

In May of 2001, President Bush unveiled the highly anticipated National Energy Policy: Report on the National Energy Policy Development Group. The Group was chaired by Vice President Dick Cheney and comprised of cabinet-level Department heads. The report represented a comprehensive analysis of the nation's energy supply and demand situation and set forth a list of 105 recommendations intended to promote conservation and efficiency, increase domestic production, and expand energy infrastructure. With the release of the report, Congressional activity immediately responded at a significant level.

To date, SPI continues to track this critical legislation through Congress.
