SPI POSITION ON ENVIRONMENTAL LABELING AND MARKETING CLAIMS
As approved by SMG I, 03/11/04
The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) believes that plastics products should be manufactured, used and disposed of in an environmentally safe and responsible manner. SPI recognizes that relevant information about environmental aspects of consumer products is desired by, and is useful to, the public. SPI believes that information about the environmental characteristics of products, including labeling and advertising claims, should reflect the following guidelines:
- Environmental labeling is governed by laws, regulations and standards that should preempt inconsistent state and local laws and should be applied uniformly across the nation. To the extent possible, these laws should be consistent with international regulations and accredited consensus standards (e.g., ANSI). To do otherwise will invite chaos in the marketplace and confusion for customers.
- Labels and environmental information should be truthful and not misleading and should distinguish between the product and its package where necessary to prevent consumer confusion.
- Claims concerning the environmental characteristics of a product or package must be supported by sound science and should be consistent with definitions developed by government agencies as well as recognized accredited consensus standards and certification organizations (e.g., ANSI).
- SPI supports the "Green Guides " published by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and adopted by several states, as well as complementary clarifying opinions issued by the FTC.
SPI is committed to help inform and educate the consuming public about the environmental benefits and impact of plastics products by working with its member companies, with government, and with private sector organizations dedicated to responsible consumer education.
