![]() Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Codes and The Corresponding North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) for Plastics Processors Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) was developed for use in the classification of establishments by type of activity in which they are engaged. The Plastics Industry is covered under Manufacturing Group 30, Rubber and Miscellaneous Plastics Products. This major group includes establishments manufacturing products, not elsewhere classified, from plastics resins. They are subcategorized as Industry Group 308, Miscellaneous Plastics Products, and further subdivided by Industry. The way in which the U.S. government collects economic statistics on industry changed January 1, 1997 under the new North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). The NAICS, which replaced the current Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), will facilitate the collection, tabulation, presentation and analysis of data regarding industrial statistics. It also promotes the uniformity and comparability of statistics in the United States, Mexico and Canada, as well as the latest revision of the United Nations' International Standard Industrial Classification. Starting in 2002, government statistics will be presented using NAICS rather than SIC. SIC 3081 Unsupported Plastics Film and Sheet Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing unsupported plastics film and sheet, from purchased resins or from resins produced in the same plant. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics film and sheet for blister and bubble formed packaging are classified in Industry 3089.
SIC 3082 Unsupported Plastics Profile Shapes Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing unsupported plastics profiles, rods, tubes, and other shapes. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics hose are classified in Industry 3052. Sausage casings manufacturing is now included in this category.
SIC 3083 Laminated Plastics Plate, Sheet, and Profile Shapes Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing laminated plastics plate, sheet, profiles, rods, and tubes. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing laminated flexible packaging are classified in Industry Group 267.
SIC 3084 Plastics Pipe Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics pipe. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics pipe fittings are classified in Industry 3089.
SIC 3085 Plastics Bottles Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics bottles.
SIC 3086 Plastics Foam Products Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics foam products. This category is now divided according to the type of resin used in the foam product.
SIC 3087 Custom Compounding of Purchased Plastics Resins This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in (1) custom mixing and blending plastics resins made elsewhere or (2) reformulating plastics resins from recycled plastics products. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing synthetic resins and custom mixing and blending resins are classified in U.S. Industry 325211, Plastics Material and Resin Manufacturing.
SIC 3088 Plastics Plumbing Fixtures This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics or fiberglass plumbing fixtures. Examples of products made by these establishments are plastics or fiberglass bathtubs, hot tubs, portable toilets, and shower stalls.
SIC 3089 Plastics Products, Not Elsewhere Classified This U.S. industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing plastics products (except film, sheet, bags, profile shapes, pipes, pipe fittings, laminates, foam products, bottles, plumbing fixtures, and resilient floor coverings).
