Plastics Industry Association Responds to Michael Bloomberg Announcement to Prevent Industry Growth

September 21, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Matt Seaholm, President & CEO of the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) released the statement below in response to Michael Bloomberg’s newly announced $85 million initiative to block petrochemical projects, including new plastics manufacturing facilities:

“If Mr. Bloomberg is interested in addressing plastic waste, he should add his funding to the billions of dollars of investments made by the plastics industry to support programs that recycle and reuse plastic. Mr. Bloomberg says he wants to help people, but it couldn’t be more clear that plastic is what saves lives and improves our quality of life. We are working hard on implementing solutions to the challenges Mr. Bloomberg identifies, but his misguided campaign will create more problems than it solves.”

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) is the only organization that supports the entire plastics supply chain, representing nearly one million workers in the $468 billion U.S. industry. Since 1937, PLASTICS has been working to make its members and the sixth largest U.S. manufacturing industry more globally competitive while advancing recycling and sustainability through education initiatives, industry-leading insights and events, networking opportunities and policy advocacy, including the largest plastics trade show in the Americas, NPE2024: The Plastics Show.
