This guideline provides information on estimating the dietary intake of substances used in food contact articles. Safety evaluations depend on the substance’s consumption, which relies on its potential level in food and the fraction of an individual’s diet in contact with packaging materials containing the substance. Using appropriate Consumption Factors (CF) and Food-type Distribution Factors (5), especially since the FDA’s October 12, 1993 Proposed Rulemaking, is crucial. The guideline defines these factors, presents their historical background, and offers methods for calculating exposure estimates. Appendix A provides a guide to food consumption data sources for specific applications.
