Ohio is home to plastics manufacturers and establishments engaged in plastics processing, marketing, support and captive activities that directly employ 74,495 people. Nationally, Ohio is ranked 2nd in plastics industry employment. It is also home to a number of plastics dependent industries that use plastics to make products or provide services. Plastics and dependent industries combined employ 1.8 million people in Ohio.

Payroll

The plastics industry’s direct payroll in Ohio, including captive plastic products, is $3.8 billion. Plastics dependent industries add another $81 billion to the state’s payroll.

Although some of the dependent payroll would exist without plastics, there would be less of it, because cost effective replacements for plastics are not available in many applications.

Taxes

Together, plastics companies and the industries that depend on plastics contribute $26.3 billion in state and federal personal income taxes, and $13.5 billion in payroll (FICA) taxes.

Shipments

Plastics industry shipments in Ohio totaled more than $32.8 billion in 2019 and comprised 7.6% of national shipments ($451.3 billion). Nationally, Ohio is ranked 2nd in plastics industry shipments.

In 2019, the U.S. plastics industry accounted for $451.33 billion in annual shipments and directly employed 993 thousand people.
